Ken Wood
Ken has been involved in various aspects of private music instruction since he received his BFA in Vocal Jazz Performance in 1996. His first gig, of that sort, was teaching group music classes at Great Beginnings Early Childhood Learning Center in Pittsburg, PA. He began teaching individual private lessons on voice and French horn at Moretti Music in ' 99 in the Philadelphia area. The following year, after moving to Denver, CO, Ken was employed teaching students at Mars Music, as well as Music & Arts Center. It was there where he added additional brass instruments, piano, and strings to his repertoire, having played all of them since high school. After he and his wife moved to La Grange, Ken began establishing himself as a teacher and performing musician in Texas. He has taught various instruments out of his home studio for over five years on South Franklin Street. As a lifelong performer, Ken began the piano at age 2 with his mother. At 5, he started violin and then added French horn a few years later in elementary school. He had studied classical voice also, but amended his style of interest to jazz after entering Carnegie Mellon University as a double major in Voice and French Horn Performance. After two years, he officially changed his major by transferring to study jazz and contemporary music at The New School University in New York, NY, from where he holds his degree.
Facilitated through various church and community opportunities, Ken grew up participating in musical theater productions during his childhood in Pennsylvania. He had continued performing on stage post-college, with his last role as Seymore in “Little Shop of Horrors” at the Ascot Theater Company in Littleton, CO. It was there where he also had the opportunity to be musical director/pit conductor for “A Chorus Line”. Ken also spent a year touring 35 states, performing assembly programs for various American High Schools with ARC Productions, based in Allegan, MI. Several of Ken's original compositions or arrangements have been performed by a number of choral groups. He worked as a session vocalist for Eagle's Nest Recording Studios in Denver and has served on five different church staffs--either as Music Minister or in an advisory position--particularly specializing in helping congregations to add more contemporary music and worship styles to their services.
Ken and his wife, Carrie, met and married in Golden, CO, after which they moved back to her home town, here in Texas. They have one son, Howie.
